The teaching and learning of maths at Park Road is based on the three main areas as laid out in the new National Curriculum 2014:

  • Fluency in calculations (using both mental and formal strategies for the four operations)
  • Reasoning
  • Problem solving

Our calculation policy states the end of year expectations and takes into account the progression through school.

Although the policy is set out in year groups, we ascertain the prior attainment of our children and move on only when they are ready to take on the next challenge.

Our children are taught a variety of methods, both mental and written, so that they develop the skills required to select an efficient method which is determined by the calculation.

We believe that any calculation needs to have a context so that its purpose can be understood. We provide our children with many opportunities to use and apply their mathematical skills in different situations and to develop their reasoning skills.

We organise workshops to give parents an opportunity to become familiar with our calculations policy.

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact school.
